I created this game for three reasons. The first is that I love games of all kinds and have always been interested in designing them. The second is that I feel tabletop Role-Playing Games (RPGs) can be enjoyed by anyone and as it stands, there isn’t much in the market for primary school aged children. The third is that, as a training primary school teacher, I am interested in trying out this rule system to see if it can enhance or consolidate the learning that goes on in the classroom. It should be noted at this point that Year 5 and 6 are the target age range, and children younger than that may find the game slightly more difficult to get their heads around.
The reason I am making this material free to download is because I’d love to see it more widespread, and to hear from anyone who has play-tested their own session in a primary school or at home with primary school aged children. Of course, there is nothing in the rules to stop people older than this playing, so if you happen upon this material and end up running a session, please do get in touch to tell me how it went! Since October 2008, Jack and local writer Daniel Clifford have been delivering Jack & Daniel’s Comic Book Workshops in schools, libraries, youth centres and other institutions in and around Newcastle. The aim of the workshops is to inspire literacy and creativity in young people, particularly boys who struggle to engage with reading. Beyond that, the sessions have been a celebration of the medium, and allowed participants to explore everything from chracter creation and story development to art skills and printing methods.
Former clients include BBC Blast, Seven Stories Centre for Children’s Books, Newcastle and Gateshead Libraries, Bede’s World, South Shields Metropolitan Borough Council and a slew of primary and secondary schools in the North East. For more information, visit the blog at:
